A filament recycler is a short chain of machines: a shredder that breaks waste plastic into flakes, a drier that drives the moisture out of them, an extruder that melts the dry flake and pushes it out as one continuous strand, and a spooler that winds the strand onto a reel. That reel is filament, the plastic wire a 3D printer feeds on. A printer frees a household from suppliers only while its bought spools last, and this carries that freedom past the last of them.
It extends a loop rather than closing one. Every pass through the shredder and the hot barrel heats the plastic again, and heat breaks up the long molecules its strength depends on. That decline has been followed out to about four rounds of extrusion before the damage takes over, though polymers differ and some lose little after six. Recovered material also starts below new, at roughly three quarters to four fifths of the strength of virgin stock. A design that treats it as a closed circle runs short of plastic at a moment it did not plan for.
One rule governs the rest: one kind of plastic at a time. Different polymers melt at different temperatures and will not draw to an even thickness together, and once two are in the same hopper the batch is scrap with no way back. Sorting the waste where it is set aside is the real work, and it is a daily habit, not a machine job. Dirt, glue, labels and ink ride through the shredder into the melt, so feedstock is washed and dried first. The extruder holds hot plastic for a whole run and gives off very fine particles and solvent vapours, so an indoor machine needs strong ventilation or a filtered enclosure. Upkeep is sharpening blades, purging the barrel when the plastic changes, cleaning the screw and hopper, renewing the drier's desiccant, and watching the strand thickness, since filament off its diameter jams the printer rather than the machine that made it.
