In practice
A fuel break is a strip of land where the plants that would carry a fire are thinned, cut back or replaced with less flammable ones. It does not stop a fire. It breaks up the continuous fuel a fire needs to keep moving, so flames reaching the strip drop in height and slow - often enough for a crew to fight the fire directly.
Width is set by the vegetation, not by preference: on level ground, two to three times the height of the tallest plant, and more on a slope, because fire runs uphill fast. Around a building, guidance asks for at least 9 m (30 ft) cleared of brush and small trees with a further 9 to 21 m (30 to 70 ft) of low plants beyond; a break across working land runs nearer 45 m (150 ft). A shaded fuel break keeps the canopy instead of clearing it: trees are thinned until crowns no longer touch, lower limbs pruned to 2 to 3 m (6 to 10 ft) above ground without taking more than a third of a tree's height, and shrubs and dead wood beneath stripped out. Broadleaved trees resist fire better than conifers, though every plant burns if the fire is fierce enough.
Grazing is how a break is usually held, not an alternative to mowing: a herd on a wide strip can take standing forage down by about four fifths in a few weeks, and cold-season grazing cuts fine fuel too. Cattle take only material under about 5 mm (0.2 in) thick, so woody growth needs browsing animals or a machine. Left alone the strip closes up within three to five years, and grazing too early in the season lets the plants recover the same year. Disturbed ground in a line invites weeds and erosion, which is why a break is planted and maintained rather than scraped bare. It suits a line an earthwork or access road already follows, and pairs with stored water and a way to release it. In hot, dry, windy weather the benefit shrinks to very little, so it is one layer of protection and never the whole of it.
