In practice
A grid connection is the metered link between a property's own electrical wiring and the public electricity network. It lets a household draw power from that network when its own generators are producing little, and lets any surplus they make flow back out along the same wires. Without one, a shortfall has to be covered by stored power or by burning fuel.
Three pieces make it work. The utility fits a bidirectional meter, which measures flow in both directions rather than only what is used. The owner fits a manual disconnect switch that can be locked open and easily reached, so utility staff can isolate the property before working on the lines. Generators feed in through inverters certified to the interconnection standard the utility recognises. Whether it pays back depends less on the equipment than on the billing rule behind it: net metering, where exported power is credited against imported power, is offered by many suppliers but not all, and some classes are exempt and set their own terms.
The surprise most owners meet is that a connection without batteries leaves them dark in a blackout. Certified equipment must shut generation down within seconds of the network failing, so nobody repairs a line an unseen generator is still feeding, and keeping power on through an outage means buying battery storage separately. The other common mistake is sizing generation to the roof or land available rather than to the electricity actually used over a year, since surplus beyond that is usually bought back at a wholesale rate well below the retail price it would have displaced. Upkeep is mostly administrative: the utility owns and maintains the meter, the owner keeps the disconnect reachable, and the tariff that justified the whole arrangement can change while every piece of equipment still works.
