In practice
Guinea fowl are ground-feeding birds kept loose on a holding rather than housed like chickens. They walk a great deal and barely fly, working across garden edges, pasture and rough ground for grasshoppers, beetles and whatever else they find. What people value most is the noise: guineas call loudly whenever anything unusual happens, so the flock becomes a standing alarm for a predator or a stranger, and nothing else on a homestead does it.
The reason people usually give for keeping them does not hold. Guineas are widely believed to clear a place of ticks. They do eat adult ticks, but studies found no reduction in the nymphs, the small early-stage ticks that do most of the disease transmission, and the birds carry nymphs about themselves, which can leave more ticks in an area rather than fewer. A site with a real tick problem is answered by changing the habitat, not by buying birds.
Besides the alarm and the foraging, the flock returns meat and eggs. Guineas reach a market weight of about 1.25 to 1.5 kg (2.75 to 3.25 lb) at 15 to 18 weeks on roughly 4.5 kg (10 lb) of bought feed each, and a free-ranging hen lays up to sixty eggs in a season. The cost is their habit. They roost in trees by instinct rather than accept a house, so keets, the young birds, need weeks of training before they will return to a fenced night pen, which is what protects them; losses in those weeks commonly run ten to twenty percent. They range wide and ignore property lines, and the call that makes them useful carries, so both can become a dispute with neighbours; local rules on keeping poultry are worth settling first. They forage the same ground a garden or food forest stands on, so soft plantings need protecting. A chicken flock complements rather than replaces them: chickens concentrate manure where it can be moved and prepare beds, which a bird that ranges and roosts out never does.
