In practice
A gully is a channel that running water has cut into a slope, and it does not stay the same size. The damage concentrates at its head, the small step at the upper end where water pours over like a miniature waterfall and undercuts the base. Every storm walks that step further uphill and takes more ground with it, so a structure set below a working head protects ground that was never moving. Gully repair is the work of stopping that retreat and returning the channel to a slope it can hold.
The order of the work matters more than the structure chosen. It starts on the land above, because a gully is fed by everything that runs off the ground uphill of it, and raising cover on that surface to about 30 percent cuts soil loss by roughly 70 percent. Next comes diverting or holding water before it reaches the gully, in a channel laid at under 1 percent grade so the diversion does not become the next gully. Only then does anything go into the channel itself. If the cover above fails the structures fail with it, and spending on the channel while the cause goes untouched is the usual way to pay twice.
Structural work must finish before the wet season, since a half-built repair is loose material waiting for the first storm, and bare regraded fill needs a cover crop the moment it is placed. Fill is compacted and slightly overfilled so it does not settle into a hollow that collects water and cuts the same line again. The lower end matters as much as the head: a repair discharging over an unprotected drop starts the next headcut there. It then needs checking after every significant storm through at least the first two wet seasons, breaches mended at once, and reseeding until cover holds. Vegetation usually closes over a treated gully within a year or two and the effort falls away, as long as stock and vehicles stay off the healed line and the catchment work above holds.
