Keyline plowing drags a narrow shank through the soil to crack open a compacted layer - a hard band below the surface that roots and water cannot get through - without turning the ground over, so the structure and life already in it stay in place. What separates it from ordinary subsoiling is the line the furrows follow: set at a slight angle to the level rather than exactly along it, so water in the slot travels out of the wetter hollows toward the drier ridges instead of collecting in the lowest ground.
Three conditions decide whether a pass is worth making. The soil must be dry the whole way down to the working depth; through wet subsoil the shank glazes its own slot wall and leaves the ground draining worse than before. There must be a real hard layer to break, since a shank through open soil spends fuel for nothing. Texture matters: coarse sandy ground lets crops root deeper afterwards, while on fine clay the whole subsoil is often equally strong, so little is gained and damage is easy. The pattern is set out from a correctly identified low point, since furrows laid from the wrong line move water the wrong way.
It is a tractor operation costing roughly 1.2 hours of work and 16 litres of fuel per hectare (half an hour and 1.75 gallons per acre). The relief is temporary, fading as traffic presses the ground back down, so a repeat every three to four years is normal rather than a one-off. It pairs with grazing under permanent perennial cover, whose roots hold the crack open once the shank has passed, and with compost or manure spread at the pass. Deep-rooted cover crops do the same job without tractor, fuel or a dry-soil window. The loosening itself is well evidenced in the right conditions; the wider soil-building and water-moving claims made for the pattern are not, since controlled trials of a single pass measured no gain in infiltration or in topsoil carbon.
