In practice
A livestock watering facility is a trough or tank that brings drinking water to where animals graze. It fills by gravity where the source sits higher, or by a pump, a windmill or a hydraulic ram where it does not. Its second job matters as much: animals stand near their water, so where the trough goes decides which ground gets grazed, where the dung falls, and whether the herd stands in a stream all day.
Two numbers do most of the design work. The first is distance: cattle should not have to walk more than about 210 to 275 m (700 to 900 ft) to drink, so a rotation needs several water points, and fences and lanes are laid out around them, not after them. The second is rate. Demand roughly triples between a cold day and a hot one, from about 38 litres (10 gallons) a day per 450 kg (1000 lb) of animal to about 115 litres (30 gallons) at 32 C (90 F), so a system sized on the yearly average is short every hot day. A herd arrives together and drinks as a mob, so refill rate matters more than tank size: allow about 7.5 litres (2 gallons) a minute per animal that can reach the water at once.
The strongest argument for one is what it stops. Where cattle were offered a trough away from a stream, trials measured about 90 percent less time standing in the water and three quarters less streambank erosion - a water-quality result delivered by plumbing rather than fencing. Site it well clear of any well or surface water, and away from feeding areas, since feed debris starts the fouling cycle. An untreated trough grows algae and collects sediment, and dirty water cuts drinking, which cuts eating and growth before it causes illness, so emptying and disinfecting it twice a year is part of the job. Where winters freeze, the line goes below the local frost depth or the design is freeze-proof with a drain, because a split line strands the stock in the week they can least be moved.
