A protective ring planting is a tight circle of strongly scented or pest-repelling plants set around the base of a single vulnerable tree. The idea is to interfere with the way a pest finds its host: insects that specialise on one plant locate it by sight and smell, so a pungent ring can mask the tree's own scent and leave the insect still searching. A second effect works the other way round: the flowers feed predatory and parasitic insects with nectar and pollen, so more of the pest's own enemies are on hand.
Expect it to shift the odds rather than settle the problem. Across a review of 150 studies covering 198 kinds of pest, 53 percent were less numerous in a mixed planting and 18 percent more numerous; a later review put the success rate at about half. It is worth doing across many trees and unreliable on any one of them. It also only pushes: a repellent with nothing nearby to receive what it displaces moves the pest rather than removing it, which is why it belongs alongside a sacrificial planting that draws the pest in, and why it never replaces a physical guard - a cylinder of fine wire mesh run from below the soil surface to the top of the trunk.
The awkward part is that orchard advice wants bare ground exactly where the ring goes. Voles eat the roots and stems of ground cover rather than the tree, and cover at the bark holds them within reach of it, so the usual instruction is a plant-free strip at least 60 cm (2 ft) out from the trunk. A dense ring pressed to the bark can build the very shelter that produces the girdling it was meant to prevent; a sparse ring, or one set back from the trunk, keeps the intent without the risk. It also competes with the tree for water and nutrients, hardest in the establishment years. Upkeep follows: keep it open enough to see soil, cut back anything leaning on the bark, and divide a perennial ring as it crowds.
