In practice
A shed is a plain enclosed building whose only job is to keep things dry, out of the wind and behind a lock. Tools, fasteners, feed, seed and leftover building material all last far longer under a roof, and the cost of having nowhere to put them does not look like a missing building - it looks like rust, rot and things that quietly disappear. It is distinct from a workshop standing next to it: the workshop is where work happens, and the shed is where things wait.
Size is worked out by drawing the outline of what has to go in and adding room to move around it, with headroom for the tallest item; a post in the middle takes away more usable floor than it appears to. A smooth level floor is what lets things be carried in and out rather than shuffled past each other. The ground should drain, and the building sits about 30 cm (12 in) above it so damp is not drawn up into what is stored, well back from any stream or pond - chemical-storage guidance uses 30 m (100 ft). Stud-wall carpentry of this kind is within reach of a careful owner-builder with ordinary tools.
Three things go wrong. In an unheated building warm moist air meets a cold metal roof, water forms underneath and drips onto everything below, so the roof needs insulation even where ventilation is good. Rodents and birds turn a store into a nest unless the shell is kept whole and every vent screened. And a shed slowly fills with fuel cans and half-used chemicals it was never built for; those belong in a separate building set apart from feed, food, seed and other structures, with a sealed floor, a 50 to 100 mm (2 to 4 in) lip to hold a spill, no floor drain and a lockable door. Upkeep is keeping the shell weathertight and screened, the floor clear enough to reach what is at the back, and the door locked.
