A short-rotation grove is a block of fast-growing trees, usually willow or poplar, cut and regrown on a repeating cycle rather than left standing for a lifetime. Each cycle runs roughly 10 to 25 years and the whole stand comes off at once. What it produces is chipped or split fuel and biomass - bulk wood burned for heat or sold as feedstock - rather than sawn boards. It also puts ground to work that nothing else wants: a wet corner, heavy clay, or soil too poor for food. Willow and poplar both cope with drainage from poor to free, so siting the grove on good land is a design error rather than an improvement.
The first two or three years decide the result. Young cuttings cannot outgrow the grass competing for water and nutrients, so weed control between and within the rows is the whole practice until the trees shade the ground themselves. That point, called canopy closure, usually comes in the second year, and upkeep falls away once it does. A stand that loses the race fails unevenly: some stems die, the rest are stunted, and the planting looks established while the harvest date slips by years. Deer will browse a young planting to nothing and rub antlers on it once the stems are saplings, so a fence through this window is part of the build.
Because the whole above-ground crop leaves each cycle, fertility leaves with it. Yields have dropped 10 to 40 percent between successive rotations where leaves, tops and slash were burned or carted off, so leaving that material lying is what keeps a grove productive. Bare ground at harvest erodes, and cutting clay while it is saturated compacts it, so harvest waits on ground conditions rather than a date. Both species strike from cuttings rather than seedlings, making this one of the few tree crops a holding can raise for itself. Planting costs about 2,500 dollars a hectare (1,000 dollars an acre) against a breakeven of 30 to 50 dollars a ton, so a grove planted for a buyer who then stops buying is a long commitment to a product with no outlet.
