When rain runs off bare ground it lifts fine soil and carries it downhill suspended in the water, which is why runoff turns brown. A silt trap is a basin set across that line of flow to hold the water still long enough for the soil to sink. What makes it a silt trap rather than a check dam is what happens next: the caught material is dug out and used where it is wanted, while a check dam leaves the same sediment in place to rebuild the channel bed. This basin is meant to fill, and meant to be emptied.
Settling takes time, so water has to travel far enough inside the basin before it reaches the outlet. The guidance asks for a pool at least twice as long as it is wide, and where the site cannot give that shape, baffles - low walls set across the pool - lengthen the path the water must take. A smaller forebay ahead of the main basin catches the coarsest grit. About 30 cm (1 ft) of bank above the design water level, called freeboard, keeps a large storm inside. Digging a basin to this pattern is work for an experienced machine operator rather than an engineer. The harder choice is where to put it: it has to sit where a machine can still reach it.
Catching this load matters because the soil carries organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus, and those feed algae in any pond below, which then strips the water of oxygen. Traps are usually built as a series so each takes what the last let past, fed by diversion ditches at the head of a gully, with a broad shallow basin ahead of a storage pond so the cleanest water is skimmed off the top. How often it needs emptying cannot be borrowed from another site: sediment yields differ between catchments by a hundredfold, and comparable structures have filled in under two years in one place and lasted decades elsewhere. A full basin lets material pass straight through, and a storm beyond the design flow can scour out what was already caught.
