In practice
Thermal mass walls are heavy surfaces inside a building - brick, stone, concrete, rammed earth or water drums - that even out the temperature of a room. Mass holds no energy of its own: when the room is warmer than the wall heat moves into it, and when the room cools it drifts back out. Nothing is heated or cooled, only delayed, and that delay is the whole product. A room with mass warms more slowly through a hot afternoon and cools more slowly at night.
Whether it helps turns on how far the temperature drops overnight, since mass must discharge into a cool night to be ready for the next day. Where nights stay warm there is nothing to discharge into, and a wall charged through a long hot day gives that heat back all evening, so in a climate with a narrow swing it does not just underperform, it inverts, and more of it makes it worse. Material matters more than thickness: by volume water holds about three times the heat of concrete or stone, so the same storage fits in a third the space. What comes back out is low-grade warmth barely above room temperature: enough to hold a room off its coldest point, not to warm a cold room.
Mass admits nothing itself, it only holds heat something else lets in, so it is sized against the sun-facing glazing that charges it, a roof overhang that makes that glazing seasonal, and earth banked outside to steady the background temperature. It is also dead weight the floor and frame must carry: a full 200 litre (55 gallon) water drum weighs over 200 kg (450 lb) and must be cabled to the framing, so whether the structure can take it is settled before it goes in. The quiet mistake is burying it: mass works only where it can trade heat with the room, so a wall panelled over, insulated or stacked with furniture quietly stops. Otherwise there is little to maintain beyond an open night ventilation path and a look for damp where mass meets frame.
