In practice
A trellis is a frame - poles and wire lines, or a sheet of steel panel - built to hold a climbing plant up in the air. Beans, cucumbers, squash and grapes sprawl flat if nothing stops them, covering a lot of ground for the food they return. Lift it onto a frame and it stands on a narrow strip while its leaves and fruit spread out overhead. The ground underneath is then free for something else, and that stacking is the point: a growing bed, a pond, a wall, a water channel or a poultry run can all carry a frame over the top and go on doing their own job. Trials on vine-type vegetables find that trellising raises both yield and income from a given area of growing space.
What the frame has to survive is not the young plant but the old one. By late season the vine is heavy with leaf and fruit, and a full canopy catches wind like a sail, so the uprights and their anchoring are set by a load that does not arrive until months after the frame goes up. A trellis also does nothing on its own: somebody has to start the plant climbing and keep tying it in as it grows, and where the crop is an annual, sown fresh each year, that work begins again every season.
The two things a trellis gives arrive on different timetables. An annual vining vegetable often fruits in the season the frame is built, while the shade a loaded frame throws on whatever grows beneath it waits on a full season of growth, because a bare frame shades nothing. The shade is real: a taller trellised planting cools a shorter crop below it. What a frame does not give is protection. A vine-covered frame over a poultry run makes birds feel covered and they run under it, but overhead planting is no barrier against a hawk, and mistaking that comfort for exclusion is the common error. The frame holds no soil either, so the climber drinks from whatever ground use sits below it, and that is where watering is arranged.
