Water reaching a house from a well, a cistern or a spring is raw: whatever came with it is still in it. A water organizing module is where that supply is treated and shared out. It is a hub rather than a filter: treatment stages are plumbed into it in sequence, and a manifold - one body with a valved branch to each fixture - carries the finished water to every tap.
The order of those stages is set by what each cannot tolerate. A mechanical filter goes first so grit does not clog the reverse osmosis membrane behind it, the membrane comes next, and activated carbon follows to catch organic compounds that pass through. Where a stage kills organisms with ultraviolet light or chlorine, a sediment filter sits ahead of it, because suspended particles shield them from the light or chemical; leave it out and disinfection stops rather than weakens. Which stages are needed is settled by a laboratory test of the raw water before anything is built, since no single test says whether water is safe. Raw and treated water are tested side by side yearly, and assembling a train this long without leaks or backflow is past hand-tool work.
A module can leave water worse than no module. A carbon cartridge run past its rated life may release what it collected back into the supply, so a neglected filter is not one that stopped working but one that has become a source; carbon also suits bacteria, so a stage left idle five days or more is disinfected before reuse. The quietest failure is mistaking clear for clean: mechanical filtration removes suspended solids and nothing else. Pores of 0.1 to 10 microns catch bacteria and the cysts of Giardia and Cryptosporidium, but not viruses at 0.03 to 0.3 microns, and nothing dissolved. Cartridges are changed on a schedule - a set interval, or a set volume such as 1,900 litres (500 gallons) - not when they look dirty, with falling flow the only backstop.
