Understanding Animal Forage
Animal forage is plant material that animals can eat, either by grazing or browsing directly or through harvested feed. Grasses, suitable legumes, leaves, and other crops may contribute depending on the animal. In permaculture design, forage production connects the growing area with the nutritional needs and seasonal care of livestock.
An edible plant is not automatically a complete ration. Species differ in what they can digest and in their need for fiber, protein, energy, and minerals. A plant suitable for cattle may be inappropriate for poultry or another animal. Plant parts, growth stage, and growing conditions can also affect feeding suitability.
The amount available changes over time. Rapid growth during favorable weather may be followed by a dry, cold, or dormant period. Planning must account for that gap through stored feed, alternative forage, adjusted stocking, or other appropriate measures. A field's appearance at peak growth is a poor guide to its year-round carrying capacity.
Management affects both animals and plants. Grazing a stand repeatedly without enough recovery can reduce its persistence and expose soil. Giving forage time to regrow helps maintain future supply. Harvesting feed also removes nutrients from the growing area, so the return of manure or other nutrient replacement needs consideration.
For example, a rotation can move suitable animals through several areas while each previously used section recovers. Water access, fencing, and observation make that rotation practical. A separate stored-feed reserve may support periods when growing forage is unavailable.
Beginners can start by learning the specific animal's feeding requirements and identifying the plants already present, including potentially harmful species. Track actual use and regrowth rather than relying only on a list of forage plants. Animal forage connects with protein production, livestock water, soil fertility, and storage. Its goal is a dependable, appropriate feed contribution that the land can continue to produce.
