Understanding Fibre
The fibre function describes a plant grown for the strands it yields rather than for food or shelter. Bast fibres come from the inner bark of stems, as in flax, hemp and nettle; leaf fibres come from long stiff leaves, as in sisal, henequen and New Zealand flax; seed fibres are hairs attached to the seed itself, as in cotton and kapok.
What a fibre is good for follows from how it is built. Long leaf fibres are coarse and strong and go to cordage, matting and sacking. Bast fibres are finer and take spinning, which is why linen and hemp cloth exist. Seed fibres are short and soft and need carding and twisting before they hold together at all.
Fibre is one of the few household needs that is genuinely hard to meet by trade in a disrupted supply chain, and one of the few that a temperate site can meet outright. Retting, breaking and scutching are the processing steps that decide whether a fibre crop becomes usable material or a pile of stems, and they need water, space and time budgeted alongside the growing.
