A fungicide is ordinarily a substance used against particular fungi, while a plant-based design may also seek disease suppression through specific biological or chemical effects. For beginners, the key distinction is between a demonstrated treatment and a plant simply described as having antifungal properties.
Fungi include many beneficial organisms as well as organisms that cause disease. Decomposers help process organic matter, and mycorrhizal fungi associate with plant roots. The purpose of disease management is therefore to address a particular harmful interaction, not to remove fungi from a healthy landscape.

If a plant-derived product or other fungicide is used, it needs to be suitable for the identified problem and applied according to its approved instructions. This function connects with air circulation, irrigation, sanitation, and plant selection. Its value depends on reduced disease under real growing conditions, with evidence appropriate to the specific intervention.
