Understanding Income
Income is the money a household or land-based project earns to support its ongoing needs. It belongs in permaculture design because even productive gardens and resource-efficient buildings have expenses. Tools wear out, equipment needs parts, and people may need to pay for services that the land does not provide.
A useful starting point is distinguishing income from savings. Growing food can reduce some grocery purchases, while selling seedlings can bring money into the household. Both can improve the financial position of a project, but they do so in different ways. Keeping them separate makes it easier to understand whether regular bills can actually be paid.
Land-based income might come from plant propagation, harvested products, education, repairs, or other activities that fit the site and the people involved. Employment away from the property can also support the design. There is no requirement for every household to turn its land into a business, and a productive activity is not automatically a suitable commercial one.
Consider a small nursery as an example. Seedlings need space, water, containers, growing media, and time before they are ready for sale. Customers need a way to find and purchase them. Unsold plants still require care. The amount received from sales therefore needs to be considered alongside the costs and work involved.
Timing matters too. A seasonal harvest may produce revenue during only part of the year, while household expenses continue throughout it. Several enterprises can also depend on the same vulnerable resource, such as irrigation water or one person's labor.
For beginners, the educational value of the income function is learning to connect ecological production with ordinary household realities. Record the work, expenses, and usable returns of a small activity before expanding it. A design becomes easier to maintain when its financial demands are visible and its income expectations are grounded in experience.
