In a permaculture plant catalog, this function can also describe broader pest-management contributions such as repelling a particular insect, disrupting its search for a crop, or supporting its natural enemies. Those mechanisms should be understood separately.
The first question is which insect is causing the damage. Many insects found on plants are harmless visitors or predators of the actual pest. Eggs, larvae, and adults can also have very different appearances and feeding habits. Identifying the damaging stage makes any response more precise.
A plant may contribute to pest management in several ways. Consider the amount of loss that matters before choosing a response, and avoid indiscriminate treatments that also harm pollinators or predators.
