Understanding Soil Biomass
Soil biomass, as a landscape function, means producing organic material that can be returned to the soil. Leaves, stems, prunings, dead roots, and suitable harvested vegetation can all contribute. In permaculture design, this function supplies the raw material for mulch, decomposition, and the ongoing renewal of soil organic matter.
The term can be confusing because soil biology also uses biomass to describe the living mass of organisms in soil. Here the emphasis is on the plant material being supplied. Once returned, that material becomes food and habitat for decomposers and participates in the soil's nutrient and carbon cycles.
Different materials break down at different rates. Soft, green growth usually behaves differently from woody stems or dry leaves. Moisture, temperature, particle size, and contact with soil affect decomposition too. The same material may be useful as a persistent surface cover in one situation and too slow to release nutrients in another.
Chop-and-drop is one way to return biomass. Suitable growth is cut and left as mulch near where it was produced or moved to an intended area. The practice still involves decisions about timing, plant recovery, seed spread, and the amount of material to leave. Cutting too frequently can weaken the source plants.
For example, a managed planting may supply periodic mulch for nearby beds while retaining enough growth to recover. Fallen leaves beneath trees can provide another stream of organic material with little transport. Together, these sources may reduce the need to bring in all mulching material from elsewhere.
Beginners can measure the usable material produced and observe how quickly it disappears. Biomass adds organic inputs, but it does not guarantee that a specific nutrient deficiency will be corrected. This function connects with ground cover, organic waste processing, and soil fertility. The goal is a continuing supply of suitable material that supports soil processes without exhausting the plants or areas producing it.
