Betony
Betonica officinalis
Betony is a low, spreading perennial with hairy scalloped leaves and spikes of reddish-purple flowers that bees visit heavily. The leaves and flowering tops steep into an aromatic tea, and the plant has a long history as a nervine tonic for tension, poor memory and frayed nerves. It spreads by creeping stolons that root as they travel and by self-seeding, so a stand fills in as a ground cover on its own and just needs a mown or edged margin to stay in bounds.
