Blackfoot Daisy
Melampodium leucanthum
Blackfoot daisy forms a tidy, low evergreen mound of white, honey-scented daisies that keeps blooming from early spring almost to winter, drawing bees and butterflies for most of the year. It thrives on rocky, low-fertility, alkaline ground with sharp drainage and very little water, and can bloom hard even through extreme heat. Rich soil and regular watering are actually what kill it - a plant moved into improved garden beds tends to flower itself out and die young, while one left on lean, gravelly ground stays compact and long-lived. It never spreads by root, only by seed, so a mound stays exactly where it was planted.
