Blueblossom
Ceanothus thyrsiflorus
Blueblossom is an evergreen shrub that fixes nitrogen without being a legume at all, partnering with soil micro-organisms that nodulate its roots and share the surplus with whatever grows nearby. It buries itself in dense blue flower plumes each spring, drawing native bees hard enough that conservation programs count it among the best pollinator plants in its range. Every part of it is loaded with saponins, and rubbing the flowers or seed pods in water raises a real, gentle soap - though the same suds are toxic to fish, so washing water should stay out of ponds and streams. It grows fast and dies young, hates having its roots disturbed or its wood pruned thicker than a pencil, and needs sharp drainage - a wet seep or a heavy clay soaking kills it well before winter cold does.
