Browntop Millet

Urochloa ramosa

Browntop millet is a fast warm-season annual grass that finishes its whole cycle in about 60 days, grown less for tonnage than for speed - as a quick soil cover, a nurse crop, and a catch crop slotted between other plantings. It produces enormous amounts of small seed, which is exactly what draws pheasants, turkeys, ducks and doves, making it a staple of game-bird food plots and deer plots alike. Taller non-shattering strains also give an edible grain that can be boiled or ground into flour, a use going back to Neolithic India. Because it self-sows heavily and keeps a viable seed bank for years, an unwanted stand needs cutting or grazing before it sets seed rather than one season of neglect.
