Bulrush
Schoenoplectus acutus
Bulrush is a tall wetland sedge that forms dense rhizome colonies along pond margins, lake edges and slow streams, growing several feet tall in standing water. Its starchy rhizomes, tender young shoots and ground seed have long served as food, and the tough round stems are woven into mats, baskets, roofing thatch and cordage. Extensive rhizomes anchor wet, muddy banks and the stands offer dense cover for waterfowl.
