Cardamom Green

Elettaria cardamomum

A rhizomatous perennial herb from the ginger family grown for its aromatic seed pods - one of the world's most valuable spices by weight. Forms a broad clumping stand under the high canopy of tropical rainforest where dappled or filtered light and constant humidity keep it growing and fruiting. Needs consistently moist acidic well-drained loam and year-round warmth with no frost; a drop below about 10 C damages growth and it will not flower or fruit outside true tropical conditions.
