Claret Cup Cactus

Claret Cup Cactus is a low, clump-forming hedgehog cactus whose cylindrical, spiny stems - each up to about ten inches long - cluster together into mounds as much as three to four feet across. In spring it produces brilliant red to orange, cup-shaped flowers up to three inches wide that open in full sun and draw hummingbirds. It grows on dry, rocky desert slopes and in dry mountain woodland, favoring but not restricted to soils of volcanic origin, and tolerates heavy drought and heat once established.
