Coreopsis Dye
Coreopsis tinctoria
Coreopsis Dye also called plains coreopsis or golden tickseed is a fast-growing branching annual native to the central and eastern prairies of North America and naturalized well beyond that range. It blooms from early to late summer with abundant yellow flowers marked maroon near the center and self-sows freely season after season. The flowers give a yellow dye that shifts red with an acid mordant and the dried plant has been brewed as a tea or coffee substitute. It wants full sun to light shade and tolerates both dry and moist well-drained soil once established which is why it thrives on disturbed roadsides and pond banks alike.
