Corsican Mint
Mentha requienii
Corsican Mint forms a tiny, dense carpet barely an inch tall that releases a very strong peppermint scent when brushed or walked on - the traditional flavor behind creme de menthe, and good raw in salads, cooked dishes and tea. Unlike most mints it spreads only modestly and needs no buried barrier to contain it, but the tradeoff is that it also does little groundcover or weed-suppression work on its own. It resents heat and humidity and dislikes dry soil, so through a long hot summer it needs afternoon shade and water once or even twice a day - this is a plant for a paver joint or a pot within reach of a hose, not ground you plant and walk away from.
