Crossvine
Bignonia capreolata
A vigorous semi-evergreen vine that climbs by branched, adhesive tendrils and can cover fifty feet of trellis, fence or tree canopy without twining. Clusters of trumpet-shaped orange-red flowers open from mid-spring into summer and serve as one of the earliest nectar sources for hummingbirds and butterflies. Foliage stays glossy green through the growing season and turns reddish-purple in cold weather, and it tolerates soil moisture from occasional dryness to occasional wetness as long as drainage is good.
