Cutleaf coneflower is a tall native perennial of moist woods, streambanks and meadows, grown for its branched clumps of golden-yellow, back-swept ray flowers around a greenish-yellow cone, blooming from midsummer into fall. Stems reach up to ten feet in the wild though cultivated plants often stay half that height, and the plant spreads by underground rhizomes into substantial colonies over time. Bees, butterflies and songbirds - especially American goldfinches after the seed ripens - make regular use of the flowers and seed heads.
