Chrysactinia mexicana

Damianita forms a dense, rounded mound of dark green, needle-like leaves that are strongly aromatic and resinous, topped for most of the year with golden-yellow daisy flowers. It thrives in poor, rocky, alkaline ground and rots quickly if the soil stays wet or gets richer than it needs. A hard pruning back can kill an established plant, so shaping it means light tip trims rather than a real cutback. Deer leave it alone, and a mass planting turns a hot, exposed slope into a solid yellow carpet in bloom.
