Flame Acanthus
Anisacanthus quadrifidus
Flame Acanthus is a low, twiggy deciduous shrub that covers itself in narrow red-orange tubular flowers from early summer into fall, drawing hummingbirds and butterflies non-stop through the hot months. It grows three to five feet tall and three to four feet wide on slender, brittle stems with pale, peeling bark, and shrugs off drought, poor rocky ground and heavy clay alike. Where winters turn hard it dies back to the root and re-sprouts fresh growth each spring, so an occasional cutback keeps it dense rather than leggy.
