Gayfeather
Liatris mucronata
Gayfeather is a native prairie perennial grown from a bulb-like corm, forming upright, unbranched flowering stalks densely packed with small purple-pink blooms from late summer into fall. Its narrow, grass-like leaves and deep, drought-tolerant root system suit dry, well-drained, often rocky or calcareous ground. The spiky flower heads draw butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators, and the ripened seed heads feed birds.
