Giant Filbert produces the biggest hazelnut in the genus, with kernel oil running as high as 65 percent - rich enough that it also goes into paints and cosmetics, not just the kitchen. It crosses freely with the common hazel, so most cultivars sold as filberts are actually a mix of the two species. It suckers on its own and thickens into a hedge without extra planting. Set two plants together, since wind pollination sets a fuller crop with a genetically different partner nearby.
