Coreopsis lanceolata

Lanceleaf coreopsis is a clump-forming perennial that covers itself in bright yellow, daisy-like flowers through spring and into summer, ahead of most other nectar plants. Two dozen or so native bee species depend on the genus, and the seed heads that follow keep bringing birds back through fall. It self-sows readily enough to form colonies on open ground and stays green as a low winter rosette when most other perennials have died back, keeping bare soil covered through the cold months. It wants full sun and sharp drainage, and does best on lean, dry soil rather than rich ground.
