Greek Oregano

Origanum vulgare subsp hirtum

Greek Oregano is a low, rhizomatous perennial herb from the dry, stony hillsides of Greece and the wider Mediterranean, and it carries a noticeably stronger flavour than common oregano. Its leaves and essential oil are the mainstay of Mediterranean cooking, and it doubles as a spreading, aromatic ground cover that draws pollinators and repels pests. It thrives in poor soil and full sun but will not tolerate wet feet, and left unchecked it creeps out of a bed by rhizome and self-sown seed into gravel and path edges.
