Maypop Passionflower
Passiflora incarnata
Maypop is a fast-growing herbaceous vine that dies back to the root each winter and regrows in spring, climbing by tendrils to cover a trellis or fence within a season. Its large, intricate flowers draw pollinators and butterflies, and the egg-sized fruit that follows is eaten fresh or made into juice and jelly. It spreads by root suckers well beyond the original crown, tolerates both dry and moist soil, and its root survives well below the point where frost kills the top growth outright.
