Ceanothus americanus
A nitrogen-fixing shrub native to the south-central US that draws three butterfly species and native bees to a plant only 2 to 4 ft tall, plus turkeys and quail eating the seed. Root rot on wet ground is the one catch - it wants a raised, gritty bed rather than amended heavy clay, and resents transplanting once established.
