Prairie Blazing Star
Liatris pycnostachya
Prairie Blazing Star is a tall, clump-forming prairie perennial with dense, cylindrical spikes of lilac-purple flowers that open from the top downward in mid to late summer. It grows from a corm-like base with narrow, grass-like leaves and tolerates poor, dry soils and summer heat once established. The long-lasting spikes are a strong draw for hummingbirds, butterflies and other pollinators, and the ripened seed heads feed songbirds.
