Red Raspberry

Red raspberry gives far more than its berries - the young spring shoots can be peeled and cooked like asparagus, and the leaves make a tea. It is a cool-temperate bramble that struggles through long hot summers, though shade cloth and primocane-fruiting cultivars now make cropping practical where it used to fail. It spreads indefinitely by underground runners and rooting cane tips, which is free propagation rather than a problem, kept in bounds by a mown or grazed margin.
