Sotol

Dasylirion texanum

Sotol is an evergreen, short-trunked desert perennial that forms a basal rosette of narrow, spine-edged leaves, prized for its architectural form in dry gardens. A flowering stalk 9 to 15 feet tall carrying small yellow flowers rises well above the foliage in early summer. It grows in dry, rocky or well-drained soil in full sun and needs almost no water once established, but its crown rots quickly if the ground stays wet.
