Sugarberry

Celtis laevigata

Sugarberry is a fast-growing, long-lived deciduous shade tree of floodplains and bottomlands across the southeastern and south-central United States, reaching a broad rounded crown with warty gray bark and small serrated leaves. Its sweet, thin-fleshed orange-red fruits ripen in fall and persist into winter, drawing a wide range of birds and small mammals. It tolerates wind, urban pollution, wet soil and a broad range of soil types, making it a tough, low-input canopy tree for difficult sites.
