Texas Barberry

Texas Barberry is a spiny-leaved evergreen shrub native to limestone hills, canyons and open ground of the Edwards Plateau in central Texas, usually growing three to eight feet tall. Clusters of fragrant yellow flowers open from late winter into spring, followed by tart red to white berries that ring the branches and draw songbirds through the season. The fruit is edible raw or cooked into preserves and can be dried like raisins, and the dense, thorny growth doubles as a living privacy screen.
