Trumpet Creeper

Campsis radicans

A dense, fast-growing deciduous vine that clings to structures with aerial rootlets and needs no trellis to climb walls, poles or trees. Clusters of large red-orange trumpet-shaped flowers bloom on new growth all summer and are a favorite of hummingbirds, for whom they are a principal pollinator relationship. It spreads readily by root suckers and self-sown seed, so it rewards a site with room to run or a mowed and edged boundary to keep it contained; sap can cause mild skin irritation on contact. It tolerates soil pH from strongly acid to strongly alkaline and grows in lean to average soil with regular moisture.
