Turkish Hazel

Turkish Hazel is the one hazel that grows as a single-trunked forest tree instead of a suckering shrub, and its firm, durable wood is worked into furniture and turnery rather than cut for basket rods. It tolerates alkaline soil and drought better than other hazels, which is why cities plant it as a street tree. Because it never suckers, it can go where a spreading colony would be unwelcome. Its kernel is smaller for the size of its shell than an orchard hazelnut's - the tradeoff for growing as a tree instead of a stool.
