Turk's Cap is a spreading, shade-tolerant shrub whose bright red flowers never fully open, their petals twisting into a loose swirled tube that hummingbirds visit constantly from late spring through fall. It typically grows two to five feet tall and about as wide, thrives in the dappled light under trees, and holds up to heat and drought once established. Its small red fruit, sometimes compared to a tiny apple, is edible raw or cooked and also feeds birds and small mammals.
