Wallflower is a short-lived, woody-based perennial usually grown fresh from seed for its dense spikes of fragrant spring flowers in shades of yellow, orange, red and purple. The blooms draw bees and other pollinating insects over a long spring bloom window. It tolerates poor, dry, alkaline soil and coastal salt exposure, needs full sun and sharp drainage to survive a second winter, and its foliage carries a toxic cardiac compound that rules it out as forage.
