Wax Myrtle
Myrica cerifera
An evergreen nitrogen-fixing shrub that doubles as a year-round windbreak and screen at 6 to 20 ft, tolerating salt spray, wind and soil poor enough that almost nothing else grows on it. Alkaline clay above pH 7.2 still causes iron chlorosis, but a medium calcium-carbonate tolerance narrows the gap to about half a point, bridgeable with a pine-bark-and-sulfur bed or chelated iron.
