Weld

Reseda luteola

Weld is a biennial herb historically grown across Europe and western Asia for the deep yellow dye extracted from its foliage and seed, once combined with woad's blue to produce Lincoln green. It wants full sun, tolerating partial shade where summers run hot, and thrives in poor, well-drained soil from sandy to loamy textures on neutral to alkaline ground. It self-seeds readily and can become weedy where conditions suit it, so seed set benefits from active management.
